The new college is comprised of two elements - a large carpentry and stonemasonry training workshop accommodating potentially noisy and dust creating activities, and an administrative and classroom block containing a variety of smaller spaces for quiet uses - including a residential apartment for the college administrator. |

These elements are arranged on the site so that the social and study areas can enjoy the open aspect towards the Channelsea River, whilst maintaining a secure site perimeter. Good communications between the workshop and classroom blocks are established through a double height 'atrium' incorporating the main entrance from the south-east corner of the site. This space connects directly to a cafeteria, and provides a central focus to the life of the college. The very heavily insulated teaching block is constructed from loadbearing masonry and hollow core concrete planks incorporating a low energy 'Termodeck' mechanical ventilation and environmental control system. The steel framed workshop is ventilated by a combination of natural and mechanical means. The building is designed to maximise natural daylight, with main areas of glazing to the north where possible.
